Fruity Pebbles

Woke up at 5:30 for an early meeting. Watching My Three Sons, I started thinking about the digital distortion offered by over the air TV today. How when this show had originally aired they probably dealt with rolling picture, and other distortions of the time. This show never knew that it would find such strange beauty in the digital age.

Made me miss the old days of scrambled porn, and reminds me a bit of my collage work.

Anti-Professionalism at its Best

So, here’s what’s up… a.k.a – busting the nutshell wide open:

I’m trying to possibly take on a new client (yes, in addition to all the other stuff I’m always doing.) Hungry people can’t turn down paying gigs. This is the part where I professionally tell the reader that I will explain more about it as the job progresses, but then don’t ever mention it again because I bomb the interview with my awkward social behavior. Either way… I’m updating my website for the first time since it’s major hack/crash that took place sometime after my fonts started to gain popularity. Thanks to all the people who liked & downloaded my fonts… and double thanks to all the random people who send me money & emails every once in a while telling me how much they love what I do.

– – – AND NOW FOR SOMETHING COMPLETELY DIFFERENT – – –

So, today was a killer of a work day. I’m an exhausted fish. I promised everyone a metal album after 2 days off, but then took on more that I could promise… as a compromise, I released my self-titled Kids That Play Dead album of 2013 demos for Thirty-Three. So, in all fairness… I should totally post the 4 pieces of songs that I was working on for the Nuns of Yore album. Mark my words, I will write words, finish this album… and it will be both offensive and hilarious to some. Probably offensive to most, but without further ado…

The Nuns of Yore – 2 Days Off Demo

  1. Straight Outta Convents
  2. Psalm 187
  3. Rule of the Spear
  4. Bad Habits & Broken Flowers

Working, Working… Working.

Ok, so… here’s a list of randomness that I’ve been working on, old school posting, BOOM! So here’s what’s up…

A Graphic Novel about Lonliness
I’m working on this with my friend Hans, I’m super into the story, but I’m not sure if I have the skills to make it look the way it should… anyway, we’ll see how it goes… I totally plan on making this happen. It’ll be super cool just to have done it in the end. I know it will be amazing no matter how I feel about my work in it. I am my worst critic by the way… here’s a super early sample:

The Nuns of Yore
I really wanted to do a Black Metal music project… just as a break from punk rock. I don’t really listen to much metal… I mean, I love Cradle of Filth, Slayer, Lamb of God, and a bunch of other metal bands that don’t have the same notoriety… I just don’t think that I have the gusto to write a non punk album (it’s really just a 2 song EP) that holds true to the metal that I love. By the way, I’m giving myself a 2 day window to research, write and record the whole thing. Let’s see what Thursday night looks like.

Harley Dealership Ads
Yep… that’s all I’m gonna say, I love making them… I don’t want to fuck with any copyrights though.

Reading
What the fuck?!?! …yeah… I’m going to start reading again, or at least just looking at the images in graphic novels and how they are illustrated. Bam! Wrapped it around to the first part of the post… ok, anyway… back to creating some new forms for my admin shift tomorrow. Later crocodiles…

Jenny Got Married

Here’s some shit I’ve been working on…

Jenny Got Married
I’ve been pretty excited about this new track I’ve been working on… well, it’s not really that new. I started working on it back in October, but it’s come a long way and I finally put down the initial scratch-vocal track so I can plan out how I want the lyrics to be. I went about it the same way we used to compose songs for Eat Muthafucka Eat back in the day.

The Illustration Lottery
I didn’t really win shit, but a lottery is kinda random… and so are my illustrations (that’s why I can’t stop making them.) A couple of weeks (weeks?) ago I came across a bunch of free books. I’ve been cutting them up and doing illustrations on the pages, it looks a bit like this:

This Blog
This year I’m gonna actually try and put some more work into this blog. I know I say that every year, but without any other personal sites to work on… I don’t really have any excuses. Let’s get this 2014 shit going.

Randomness

Made a shit ton of pulled pork in the Crock Pot today… no more buying lunch at work for us.

When life gives you Extra Virgins, make Extra Virgin Olive Oil.

Unicorn War Party

Taking a brief break from work to get started on the new 2013 album. Trying to think up a new name for the album and for song titles, here’s a brief rundown of what I’ve got so far.

  • All the Praise
  • Cannibal Handleman
  • Unicorn War Party
  • 40oz. Ninjas
  • The Tallest Man Alive
  • Cartoon Fish Parade
  • Olympic Restathon
  • NO=E

More to come later, as for now. I’m going to start putting some demos together for later. Perhaps this year we’ll get back into blogging (heard that before.)

…and it goes a little something like this, hit it!

Tomorrow is going to be the first in a number of up and coming Sketchbook Fridays… hopefully I’ll be able to stick to the whole blogging thing again. I’ll be having to keep up on a multitude of emails at work, so hopefully I’ll be able to use this to keep up on my typing skills. Here’s a random ideas (I’m sure I;ve written it before somewhere, but now it’s official.)

Fortune Cookies

So, a couple of months ago I came up with an idea to make fortune cookies with Dr. Dre quotes as fortunes. The only one I could think of… er, actually the best one I could think of was “If you dis Dre, you dis yourself.” Now, I’m pretty sure that is actually a Snoop Dogg quote, or someone else… however, it fits perfectly as a fortune cookie. Then the quote led me to another great idea…

Propaganda Posters

So, here’s a brief rundown of the idea. I’m going to do these all minimal color like a screen printed poster, but probably assemble the final piece a four-color print. Anyway, …and it goes a little something like this, hit it! The original phrase from the fortune cookies is the main idea behind the posters. Imagine, a poster next to the time clock at work… there’s a picture of a stressed out guy making a b-line for the time clock, and a caricature of Dre behind him. The copy reads: “Punching in late, is like calling Dr. Dre a bitch… you’re only dissing yourself!” …another one above a stove might go a little something like (this, hit it!)… a picture of a stressed out cook holding a burnt steak with a bunch of tickets piling up, and the Dr. Dre caricature (again.) Copy: “Burning dinner is like calling Dr. Dre a buster… you’re only dissing yourself.” Take it in… the posters will be available after I finish the first shirt design.

That’s all for now kids… stay tuned for tomorrow.

The AWOL. ep.

So, I’ve got this idea to do another EP for soundcloud.com (we’ll see how long it actually stays up because,) I’m going to do all covers… but at the same time it’s sort of a concept album. It’s gonna be a 4 song EP, with the possibility of a 5th song recorded “hidden track” style at the end of the 4th track. Anyway, here’s the concept (and the cover so I don’t forget)…

So, the concept is extremely random. I’ve been going through random files on my computer… blah blah found some old songs, blah, saw one of the owl stickers, Lorem Ipsum Dolar, wanted to spell “OWL” with the illustration in the middle… oh, so that’s the cover story, and I drew that picture and came up with a title. So, now there’s the matter of the tracklist (BTW I was listening to the Melvins the whole time I came up with this.) That factors into the Lysol EP, where they covered the Alice Cooper song that I’ve always wanted to do (cover) since way, way back. So I came up with this concept…  4 songs from back in the day that relate to people that co-inside with letters (somewhat randomly) in the word AWOL (pronounced Ah-wool.) So here goes…

  1. A – The Ballad of Dwight Fry – the A is for my friend Aaron (it get’s more random as we go) but I’ve always really wanted to do a cover of this song, and we used to listen to it all the time when we were in high school. It’s by Alice Cooper (covered by the Melvins BTW,) love that bleeding guitar outro.
  2. W – Credit in the Straight World – the W is for Marci (which actually starts with M, but upside down it’s a W) so… (don’t worry, it get’s more random) She used to listen to Hole and Pearl Jam a lot back in the day. There’s no way I’m going to attempt a Pearl Jam song… this should be tricky enough as it is.
  3. O – Window Shop for Love – or – Let’s Go Away – the O is for Jon, his name has 3 letters… O is the middle one (and if that’s not random enough… it gets even more.) He had a CD copy of Is This Real? by the Wipers back in the day, he made me a tape, I listened to it religiously, and probably covered the whole album on demo cassettes while I was learning guitar back in high school.
  4. L – The New America – the L is for Don (ironic) he used to have a shirt (in the 90’s people wore work shirts with other people’s names (nametags?) on them) with the name “L” embroidered on it. We played a show once with this band, Spider Virus, and they were amazing. He picked up a copy of their CD and we listened to it in his car a lot… so it fits, and also it’s a good song to leave with.

Now as far as hidden tracks go, it comes down to 2… 1.) I Like Fucking, by B.C.Ragtime (which it will probably end up being) and 2.) Zero the Hero by Black Sabbath which I really want to do because (for one) I can relate that song to both Don and Aaron, so it sort of brings the whole EP together, and (for two) I’ve always wanted to cover that song (or Sweet Leaf) by Black Sabbath.

– HOWEVER –

Spider Virus cover Zero the Hero immediately after The New America, so I think it might be a no go. I Like Fucking it is(or is it, you’ll just have to wait and see my mood at the time!) Anyway, this time wasn’t logo-rama, but I’m still waiting to hear back from the Russell, so… until next time kiddies.
