New Music Friday 09/01

New Music Friday this week is plaged with a bunch of comeback genres. I’m still not sure what the thing is with all the vocal effects… it only leads to disappointment… or maybe I’m just old. Anyway, here’s what’s happening this week…

If I’m Lucky – Jason Derulo

This song sounds a bit like some weird salsa-esque song about dating someone in the afterlife… or the next incarnation… or just hooking up in one of those timelines? Either way, all I know is that unlike I had initially thought… this song is not about having sex in graveyards.

Plot Twist – Remix – Marc E. Bassy, Hailee Steinfeld

This song is not about that movie, the Sixth Sense. It’s about a “player” who falls in love, and wants to get married. Spoiler Alert: at the end you do not find out that the “player” is Bruce Willis, however, just like the Sixth Sense… this song sucks.

Gucci Gang – Lil Pump

This is total garbage… reminds me of Ratchets – Lil Debbie, only I liked the Lil Debbie song for some reason. If cassingles, or 7″ compilations were still a thing, you could be this would be the Ratchets B-side on the jukebox at your local Malt (liquor) Shop.

Punk (Feat. Travis Barker & Juicy J) – Yelawolf, Travis Barker, Juicy J

Not that I’m any authority on Punk, but… having a general idea of who these people are… based on jobs I’ve done in the past. I gotta say, this is very WTF?!? …apparently, southern punks pop their collar.

Deathless – Ibeyi, Kamasi Washington

I think the person singing sounds like they’re trying to sound like Björk. Subject matter is interesting though, like the audio version of Dead Like Me or Final Destination… only everyone lives. Apparently, young people never die… no matter how much dumb –ish we do. I really love the horn section in this song, reminds me a lot of the ska that was coming out in the early days of Hell-cat records.

Selfish Love – Jessie Ware

This song reminds me of a Cardigans song, the way the vocal progression works. The music itself is a bit like Sergio Mendes & Brasil ’66, I enjoy the way the vocals sort of wrap around each other in the pre-chorus. That hard stop directly before the words “Selfish Love” really drives that Sergio Mendes thing home for me. Other than that, it does have a bit of a samba feel… It’s looking like this is going to e the favorite of the week. I’m a huge sucker for 90’s music and Brazilian jazz, and Sergio Mendes é meu favorito.

New Music Friday 8/25

This week I was awestruck by a pleasant surprise on New Music Friday.

New Quicksand

Holy Shit! There’s a new Quicksand album coming out November 10th.

New Music from Quicksand

About a month ago, Genevieve and I went down to Boston to see the Melvins, and noticed that Quicksand was going to be coming through in September. As awesome as that would be (have been?) it was kind of exhausting driving into the city, and we’d gone in 3 or 4 times that week. So, we decided to pass. Either way, today on Spotify, they “dropped” the first song, Illuminant, from the new album… it’s already got over 18K plays, and the Boston show is sold out.

I’m not really sure how I feel about this song yet, but I have no doubt that the album (upon it’s release) will be nothing short of greatness. I’ve been a Quicksand fan for quite some time now, and it’s nice to hear something new from the band that has introduced me to so many new people over the years.

My pre-order for this long-awaited release has been reserved.

Random Highlights

Ayokay feat. Baker Grace – Too Young (youtube)
This track has all the clichés of what makes me think of what “new” sounds like…

  • soft voiced female lead
  • repetetive chorus
  • overstating the word young
  • blaming a lack of motivation on everything but yourself

Then it does that stupid scratchy-glitch thing with the vocal track, and after it ends (for some weird reason) the algorithm plays a Nerf Herder song (shrug) I’ve never liked that band, but I thought that was interesting. Either way, something about this track made me feel like it was to overall winner for the day.

You can find this track, along with a bunch of other garbage, in my Garbage Playlist on Spotify.
